PGI

Philippine Geothermal Incorporated is a subsidiary of Unocal Incorporated (the Union 76 people).  The purpose of PGI is to conduct research into the "production" of steam using geothermal sources, and to supply steam to several power plants which are owned and operated by the National Power Corporation, the state run power company.

The PGI compound at Tiwi is fully staffed with with everything from janitors and maids to mechanics, engineers and medical personnel.  Since the power plants run 24 hours a day, there are also PGI people that control the steam production working 24 hours a day.  Compound personnel construct and maintain the many kilometers of piping spread over the area, and drill new steam wells.  There are offices, a conference center, several buildings for guests to stay in, a recreation facility which just happens to be the right size for a basketball/tennis court, a large warehouse, machine shop, and an emergency source of water cleverly disguised as a swimming pool.  A very nice place.

However, 90% of this project had nothing to do with this nice place.
