The Pulse in Peru

Ever wonder what it's like to support a seismic field experiment in Peru?  PASSCAL's Assistant Director, Mike Fort, recommends the Singular Subduction blog, written by Yale research assistant and English major, Laura Marris. Mike was in Peru as an advisor, trainer, and to offer general logistical support to the PULSE experiment.

PULSE is an acronym for PerU Lithosphere and Slab Experiment. This project is the work of Yale assistant professor Maureen D. Long, Lara Wagner (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, now at Carnegie Institution for Science), and Susan Beck (University of Arizona and Chair of IRIS Board of Directors). The purpose of this two-year study is to develop an understanding of how flat slabs form, and the causes and effects of flat slab subduction.
