Requirements for Active Experiments

We recommend active-source data sets be archived in PASSCAL's PH5 format. SEG-Y format is also acceptable. Both formats require a data report as described in point 3 below. Please also include copies of any field notes, observer reports, or sensor axis orientation offsets, if they occurred.

Prior to sending your data to PASSCAL, be sure to fill out a mobilization form, to obtain an assembled dataset id number. We can't process the data without this code.

PH5 requirements

  1. Shot/Source information - in dep file format, from the pocus program, TSP input file format, or in spreadsheet form:
    • time & identification of each shot/source
    • latitude & longitude of each shot/source
    • elevation of shot/source
    • size of shot in kg or magnitude of source
    • depth below surface of shot/source
    • comments (if applicable)
  2. Receiver/Station information - in dep or TSP format, or in spreadsheet form:
    • identification of each station
    • serial number of receiver
    • manufacturer and model of receiver
    • type of sensor attached
    • latitude & longitude of each station
    • elevation of station
    • comments (if applicable)
  3. General information about experiment - please submit a PDF file:
    • principal investigators names & institutions
    • experiment name & nickname
    • paragraph describing purpose of experiment
    • paragraph describing layout of instruments
  4. All raw data files - can be in one of these forms
    • .trd files
    • .ref files
    • compact flash disks
    • raw disk images

SEGY requirements

  1. If submitting seismic waveforms as shot gathers in SEGY format, additional stages of data reduction may be included, such as a final stack profile.  All appropriate header values should be filled in according to the SEGY standard.
  2. Please include a description of disk or other media contents, and instructions on how to read them. In addition to the Data Report, please include all information on the geometry of the experiment (metadata). Traces should be time-corrected whenever possible, and you should supply a discussion of whether timing corrections were applied to the data. If no timing corrections were applied, please include copies of the ref2segy log files.
