Descr: We plan to design, detonate, record, and analyze single-fired, contained explosions in both hard and soft rock mines that routinely detonate delay-fired explosions. The series of single-fired explosions will span the range of yields, depth of burial and confinement that are of primary interest for monitoring purposes. The data from these experimental studies complemented by data from production mining that includes hard rock fragmentation and soft rock casting production mining explosions will provide the basis for establishing a physical basis for discrimination tools. Additionally, the work will quantify the fundamental physics that govern energy partitioning among seismic phases and thus the relation between the amount of explosives and the size of regional phases.
