Descr: A joint project with the China Seismological Bureau to perform seismic studies on the Tibetan Plateau through seismic tomography studies. This project would follow the general guidelines in the February 1, 2002, proposal entitled "3-D Seismic Tomography Study of China", but concentrating on the Tibetan Plateau in order to meet the needs of CSB. Abstract quoted from the above proposal: We propose a collaborative USGS/CSB program to determine the S-wave velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle of China. In order to achieve this goal, we will provide broadband seismic instruments to the China Seismological Bureau (CSB) to be installed by the CSB over a wide geographical region. The broadband stations to be deployed in China will be valuable for a wide range of seismological studies, and will contribute to the assessment of earthquake hazards in the region. In addition to the determination of 3-D velocity structures, as proposed here, the seismic stations can be further used for the following studies: - Improved seismic locations - Seismic moment tensor inversions - Seismic waveform modeling - Seismic attenuation studies - Investigation of the earthquake cycle - Earthquake Prediction
