Descr: We propose a 5-year study of the eastern Tibetan plateau, to be conduced jointly by scientists from MIT and the Chengdu Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources. We address a broad range of issues pertinent to the structure and evolution of the crust and mantle and to deformation within Tibet and adjacent regions. The sesimological component of the project is aimed at constraining the 3D structure of the crust and mantle beneath the study region, including isotropic and anisotropic wavespeed variations, and to locate and characterize regional earthquakes. We aim to apply a range of techniques, including travel time and wave form tomography, shear wave splitting for anisotropy with horizontal and variable axes of symmetry, and receiver functions.
