Descr: The objective of this project is to measure rayleigh wave attenuation rates (specifically alpha) at 20 Hz in a relatively quiet environment in Nevada. We have previously shown that elephant vocalizations, with a fundamental frequency around 20Hz, create seismic replicates that travel as Rayleigh waves. To determine if these seismic replicates would be of use to elephants in long distance communication we need to determine how far these signals can travel in the ground. By using a shaker to generate a 20 Hz singal that will be recorded using a geophone array with 3 meter spacing we will be able to accurately measure alpha.
