Descr: In 2006 and 2007, the ANDRILL Program will drill two new sites in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, to recover stratigraphic data from key intervals in Antarctica's Cenozoic history. One of the sites, in southern McMurdo Sound, will recover Miocene to Recent strata that are identified on existing marine seismic data from the Polar Duke 90 cruise. Drilling a site on the existing PD 90-46 seismic line poses a high risk due to proximity of the site to the annual sea-ice break-out zone. We will conduct an over sea-ice seismic survey to gather approximately 20km of new seismic data heading south and away from the PD-90 line. These new data will be used to site the rig in a more stable region of the sea-ice. We will trial a different approach for gathering sesimic data than previously used during ANDRILL related seismic surveys. A generator injector gun will be used as a source in an attempt to mitigate a problematic bubble pulse that has impaired recovery of quality data in previous sur! veys that have utilized explosives as a source.
