Descr: We plan to do two projects back to back in New Zealand in austral summer 2005. The first is a study of upper mantle reflections beneath the back arc spreading center of North Island , New Zealand. This is a follow up to the NIGHT survey of 2001 that IRIS supported. We identified very strong reflections in the upper mantle that have properties that suggest the top of a partially fluid body as the reflector. We plan to go after these reflections wuith a very detailed study. The second project is a follow up the the Marlborough fault zone( MFS) study of 2000/2001 funded by NSF and supprted by IRIS. That was a passive seismic study. The new proposal goes in Dec 1, 2003 and is to do an active source study through t the MFS to try and see how Moho is offset by large strike-slip faults.
