Descr: We propose to deploy 50 broadband seismometers in Jalisco Mexico for a period of about 1.5 years. The goal of the projet is to seismically image the Rivera microplate and the adjacent Cocos plate to the southeast. This is the site of largest earthquake in Mexican history (1932) and has unusual volcanic activity. Above the Rivera plate, the Jalisco "block" is rifting from Mexico. The tectonic activity is clearly related to the subducting Rivera plate but the configuration of the plate is virtually unknown due to low seismicity. It has been proposed that the Rivera plate has a steep dip and has a tear separating it from the larger Cocos plate. Our project is to determine the geometry of the two plates and hopefully place constraints on the dynamics of the region.
