  • Descr: A preliminary deployment of PASSCAL seismographs at Merapi in 1998 yielded a remarkable data set of volcanic earthquakes associated with dome growth, including very long period (VLP) signals superposed on dome related shallow seismic events. The proposed project aims at resolving the source mechanisms for these events, via a more comprehensive PASSCAL deployment of broadband seismographs in 2001 in order to experimentally test hypotheses developed on the basis of preliminary data. The results of this study will have important implications in interpreting broadband signals associated with volcanic processes, and may lead to a fundamentally new understanding of seismicity associated with hazardous dome growth.
