  • Descr: A profile across the central North Island presents and opportunity to stud;y the featu;res of a very compact active continental margin. All components one normally associates with su;ch a margin are present. From east to west these include: trench, accretionary prism, axial range, active andesite volcanoes, backarc spreading zone, dormant fold and thrust belt and foreland basin. The Night project aims to obtain a crust and upper mantle structure image of these main features, Specifilc science targets are: 1. The link between crustal structure and the occurrence of volcanism. 2. The role of processes in the upper mantle controlling crustal structure, topography and tectonics in the central North Island. 3. The mechanical conditions on, and adjacent to, the plate interface beneath the eastern North Island.
