Instrument Request for Mayagüez Site Response Pilot Study (201915)

Name: Mayagüez Site Response Pilot Study

Long Name: Mayagüez Amplification and Site Response Pilot Study

Description:

This project to be run by the Puerto Rico Seismic Network/Puerto Rico Strong Motion Program in collaboration with the USGS (Tom Pratt) aims to produce a pilot study of amplification of earthquake ground motion relative to bedrock sites in the region of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Similar studies have already been performed for sites such as Central and Eastern North America (Pratt et al, 2017). However, such studies are currently lacking in Puerto Rico. Annually, the Puerto Rico Seismic Network registers between 3,500 and 4,000 local earthquakes in the Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands region. The last historical major earthquake in Puerto Rico occurred in 1918 approximately 30-50 km Northwest of Mayagüez with a magnitude of ~7.3Mw. In this pilot experiment, we propose to deploy 13 L-22 short period instruments in the municipality of Mayagüez as a pilot study to explore the feasibility of using future similar experiments to better understand potential ground motion amplification impacts in Puerto Rico as well as better understand ground motion in ocean island environments.
