SIN CITY, BABY!!

When I came up with the title for this trip I meant for "naughties" to refer to the current decade. You know -- seventies, eighties, nineties...naughties. But seeing as how the whole thing ended up here in Vegas... Well, when in Rome, or Las Vegas, or Caesar's Palace (which covers you either way) you might as well call it as you see it.

It was kinda hot the few days we were in Las Vegas. It was 46 degrees Celsius/115 degrees Fahrenheit. We chose to avoid direct combat with the heat and start at about 5:00 in the morning. The usual routine was to get everything ready to go in the early evening the day before, like we did in Los Angeles, then load up and hit the trail as early as possible in the morning. Below we were loading up for the last day of work. We didn't want to load the Texans into the vehicles late in the afternoon, because it would still have been too hot.

I'm definitely not a morning person, but in this case I was willing to make an exception.

The lines in Las Vegas were generally all along Interstate 15, which runs right through the middle of town. In some places there was just not any dirt to be found. Luckily there were plenty of cracks in the asphalt to get you started. Jim pounded away while I followed behind and planted during this segment.

The game plan was basically the same at it was in Los Angeles. Deploy an insturment every 20 meters, let them all lay in place for 30 minutes, then pick them up and move to the next section. That's Interstate 15, and the morning traffic, behind Chris and Jim watching Stefan plant a geophone. It looked like nice, soft gravel, but it wasn't. You still needed to pound a hole into it to get the geophones started. What a job.

It didn't take very long for things to heat up once the sun came up. Not that it was very cool before the sun came up.

This was the start of our group's last deployment line in Las Vegas.

Well, at least it wasn't the ocean this time.
