In the mountains just north of town they built a lake (it's not like they are in a desert that is running out of water or anything).
There's no since wasting all of that water, so once you have the lake you might as well build a huge casino, resort, golf course, and housing development around it. Above is the shopping district. The whole place is designed to look like an Italian village. It is a highly stylized version, from what I've seen of Italy, to say the least.
You can rent boats large and small for gatherings and tours of the lake.
If you don't own one of the $500,000 homes around the lake you can stay at the Hilton Hotel, or the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, instead.
We returned to Lake Las Vegas around New Year's 2004-2005. A (what else?) floating ice skating rink was set up. Just what you would expect to find in the middle of the desert.
